VOLCANO NATIONAL PARK

If you plan driving to the summit of Maui’s 10,200 ft. dormant volcano, Haleakala, plan your trip.  The road is narrow and winding and with each vertical foot the temperature seems to lower.  It’s not unusual to see visitors in the summit parking lot wrapped in the only things they had in their rental car, beach towels!  But the trip is worth it! There is no food, beverages or gasoline in the park but the views are sensational, the rugged trails challenging and the chance sighting of the endangered Hawaiian goose, the Nene, not to be missed! The stark volcanic crater is amazing to see and the Visitors Center is informative and definitely worth checking out…and it’s warmer inside too!  Some people brave the pre-dawn drive and temperatures to witness sunrise atop Haleakala, it’s amazing.  If, however, you have any respiratory concerns, remember the air is super thin up there and even a slight exertion can be taxing.
