Hard to believe, but many locals and visitors alike prefer cooler, higher elevations rather than Maui’s dozens of tantalizing, pristine, sun-drenched beaches. Above Central Maui on the slopes of majestic 10,200 ft. Haleakala, lies Upcountry Maui, a seemingly endless, winding collection of tucked away residential communities, most of which command views one can only dream about…views of the outer islands of Lanai, Kahoolawe, and little Molokini and the central valley that gave Maui its “Valley Isle” nickname; of the cloud topped West Maui Mountains; and of both sides of the island from Kahului/Wailuku across the whole valley to Maalaea and Kihei. Upcountry Maui is mostly rural with thousands of acres of ranch lands and small farms. Every Saturday there’s a Farmers Market from 7 a.m.-11 a.m. at the Kula Malu Town Center on Hwy. 37 near Long’s Drugs, between Pukalani and Kula. There fresh locally caught fish and fresh locally grown vegetables, fruit, flowers, coffee, macadamia nuts and exotic prepared foods are readily available for purchase. The major towns of Upcountry are Makawao, Pukalani, Kula and Haiku and since each has its own personality, visiting each is well worth it.
